Dr. Andrew Duffy, a Master Lecturer in Physics Department at Boston University, will be presenting on ‘Using Simulations to Help Students Learn Physics’.

Abstract: Over the years I have developed 200 HTML5 simulations for introductory physics, which we use in various ways. The collection of simulations is available here: https://physics.bu.edu/~duffy/sims.html

We use them in class to illustrate different concepts; as part of homework problems so the students can explore the concepts themselves; as part of labs, so the students see ideal cases; and they are also incorporated into an interactive e-book on Top Hat. We have also been crowd-sourcing the creation of worksheets to accompany the simulations, through workshops we have been running at the annual meetings of the American Association of Physics Teachers. In this talk, I will show several examples, talk about different ways we have been using the simulations, and also discuss results of our education research efforts.
