For this month’s colloquium series, we feature Dr. Dipak Rimal and Dr. Nabraj Bhattarai. The title of their presentation is “Predicting the Unpredictable: What We learned Forecasting Nepal’s 2082 Election.”
Physicists excel at finding patterns in complex, noisy data. Nepal’s 2082 election, however, delivered something few saw coming — a single party sweeping to an outright majority in a system designed to produce coalition governments. This talk details SagarmathaIQ’s probabilistic model for forecasting that election — covering methodology, results, and an honest assessment of where the model succeeded and where it fell short. We close with broader reflections on what happens when you apply physics-based intuition to intricate social systems.
