Message from the Chair

On behalf of the Organizing Committee, I am delighted to warmly invite you to the 8th Association of Nepali Physicists in America (ANPA) Conference, scheduled for July 17–20, 2025. This hybrid conference will include in-person sessions at Fairmont State University in Fairmont, West Virginia, and the Central Department of Physics at Tribhuvan University in Kirtipur, Kathmandu, Nepal, as well as virtual sessions via Webex.

Since its inception in 2018, ANPA has been dedicated to fostering collaboration among Nepali and international physicists and scientists worldwide. The conference aims to provide a platform for presenting groundbreaking scientific discoveries, strengthening networks, and facilitating collaborations across academia, research institutions, and industry.

The program will feature various sessions, including keynote addresses, plenary lectures, invited talks, and presentations by students, researchers, early-career professionals, and experienced experts in physics. These sessions are designed to enrich the global physics community and inspire innovative ideas.

For in-person attendees, limited financial support opportunities will be available to cover reasonable travel expenses, such as airfare, ground transportation, meals, and lodging. Support will be awarded based on financial need, on a first-come, first-served basis, and subject to available funds.

We are excited to host this conference and look forward to welcoming participants worldwide to engage in discussions and share the latest advancements in physics. Your presence and contributions are essential to the success of this event, and we eagerly anticipate your participation.

Warm Regards,

Carl Wieman, PhD Prof Emeritus Department of Physics and Graduate School of Education, Stanford University, USA
Nobel Laureate in Physics (2001)

Biography

Professor Carl Wieman, a distinguished physicist and educationist, holds a joint appointment as professor emeritus of Physics and of the Graduate School of Education at Stanford University. He is celebrated for his Nobel Prize-winning research in physics on Bose-Einstein condensation, a unique state of matter. Beyond his remarkable scientific achievements, Wieman is deeply committed to enhancing undergraduate science education through the Carl Wieman Science Education Initiative, championing evidence-based, interactive teaching methods. He has led major educational projects at both the University of Colorado and the University of British Columbia, significantly influencing thousands of students by fostering active learning and a profound understanding of scientific concepts. Wieman has also authored the book “Improving How Universities Teach Science: Lessons from the Science Education Initiative.” Additionally, he served as Associate Director for Science in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy under President Barack Obama. Furthermore, Wieman founded the Physics Education Technology Project (PhET), which offers interactive simulations for science education.

Taking a scientific approach to physics education

Guided by experimental tests of theory and practice, science has advanced rapidly in the past 500 years.  Guided primarily by tradition and dogma, science education has remained largely medieval.  Recent research on how people learn, combined with careful experiments in university physics classrooms, is now revealing much more effective ways to teach and evaluate learning than is currently used in most science classes.  I will discuss these results and what they tell us about principles of learning and their effective implementation in physics courses and research advising.  This research is setting the stage for a new approach to teaching that can provide the relevant and effective science education for all students that is needed for the 21st century.
